It’s just amazing to me that Fiona Apple is a real girl.

From the back of a book I just got in the mail
There is something about Lux. He’s a thief and a liar; he is selfish and self-absorbed and hopelessly vain. But while he looks like Lana Turner and romances like a true Casanova, Lux is actually more like a bumbling, oblivious Mary Tyler Moore. Amid shouting mobs, police shields, and the hurled bricks of the ’80s Brixton riots, Lux is searching for Pearl—the love of his life. Her home has been...

Had to go into work early today, and saw the coffee cart guy who is stationed in front of my building every morning taking a delivery from a big semi. The semi had the name of the supplier emblazoned on the side, and even illustrations of all the stuff they sell wholesale to coffee cart guys all over town. Not to be weird and maybe I just imagined this but it seemed like he was kind of embarassed...

Always disorienting and improbable. The idea of building one is daunting in the same way trying to aim a pistol at a target five miles away would be.

keyholez: The shorthand epithet I’ve heard people “in the financial world” use most often to snidely refer to ignorant, gullible retail investors? Dentists. Sometimes “dentists out in Minnesota.” Possibly unrelated, but at least one editor of the New York Times Book Review— I think it’s more than one, actually— has said that when he imagines his audience, he imagines a...

Plane Crashes Into Hudson River →
keyholez: fiatluxemburg: elsam: “The plane, according to the news report, may have hit a flock of birds.” This is an update from “the plane, according to the news report, may have hit a bird or birds.” Second bird? On whatever channel it was that people at work were watching, one reporter kept using the phrase “at least two bird strikes”. Sorry but it would be cool if terrorists...

Not a lot of jokes out there about school shootings. This occurs to me because I just thought of a few really obvious ones and realized I’d never heard them before.

Rolle Is Heading to Oxford, Not the N.F.L. - NYT →
doree: Pretty cool. Myron Rolle, a Florida State football player who’s projected to be one of the top 49 picks in the NFL draft, will be a Rhodes scholar next year instead of going straight to the NFL. Oh, and in case he didn’t sound awesome enough, he wants to go to med school and open a clinic for the needy in the Bahamas when his NFL career ends. I mean, or he could have gone to play football,...

fridge woes
lizgoodwin: I’m waiting for my student to come over. I decided to set out a snack for when she gets here (15 year-olds are hungry!) so I opened the door to our cavernous fridge. The only item that could count as a snack was a hunk of cheddar cheese that my roommate left behind when she went to Tokyo. I cut this up in as many squares as possible and placed them on a plate. But then I realized I...

“His favorite novel was Madame Bovary, not only because of its ‘absolutely precise’ writing, but also a c’est moi identification with its heroine: the novel, said Cheever, was ‘the first account we have of controlled schizophrenia,’ a phenomenon he was somewhat familiar with. He reread the book over and over as an adult and could recite long passages word for...

Short stories in which some terrible accident takes place make up a whole genre. I’m prepared to say that most of these stories exert their force over readers in a way I find unsavory. It is rather easy to break a little girl’s neck in a skiing accident and provoke powerful, visceral emotions. Dread and grief are such horrible things to experience in real life that an appeal to the...

Fishing bits of egg shell out of a bowl of about-to-be-cooked scrambled eggs. Is there a trick to dealing with this, besides cracking the eggs more carefully? It seems like raw egg whites have a peculiar consistency that makes it impossible to grasp the shell b/w your fingers or catch it on a knife/spoon.
