From a recent New Yorker article about a woman who got her house taken away:
We talked about Addie, and when the subject of her loan came up Dillon looked at Addie’s house and shook his head. The roof was patched, the fascia was rotting, and the porch sagged underfoot. He remarked, “When they said forty-five thousand dollars, I said, ‘Where’d the money go? I don’t see it.’ ” (Marco Sommerville, the council president, had wondered the same thing. “It’s the obvious question,” he’d told me, and suggested that an investigation might be warranted. “There are some people who feel there’s a snake in the cockpit somewhere.’’)
